Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber has decided to write and produce a sequel to one of the world's most popular musicals 'The Phantom of the Opera'.
It's going to be called 'Love Never Dies' and the rumours strongly suggest it's based on the Forsyth book 'The Phantom of Manhattan'. In this book, the Phantom flees to America and works in an amusement park. Christine also happens to be in Manhattan, singing opera still and now married to Raoul. I won't say much more about the storyline in case it spoils it for you but many Phans (myself included) don't like this book very much as it's not true to the original story and characters by Gaston Leroux.
'Love Never Dies' is due to debut in three cities all at once: London, Toronto and Shanghai, roughly in October or November of this year.
No cast has been officially named yet but there's a strong possibility that John Barrowman (Torchwood) or Ramin Karimloo (current London Phantom) may be taking part.

You're right DW, many parts of the plot in the book may be excluded from the musical but the overall storyline of POM is terrible which is why I'm worried about it!

Well in the Phantom of Manhattan book Erik is the father of Christines child, not Raoul. Raoul is also a drunk and aparently the bad man in this musical. Christine also dies, i think she got shot.
But hey just cos its in the book doesnt mean its gonna happen in the new Musical.

Unfortunately John Barrowman declined a part in Love Never Dies so now Ramin Karimloo is playing Erik and Joseph Millson is Raoul.

Heya, I loved the first Phantom of the Opera and can't wait to see 'Love Never Dies'! And it would really make my day if John Barrowman was to perform in it. He is amazing and i love him dearly....Please Please place John in the cast. I know the production is going to be spectacular. Can't wait! So excited! XxxxxXxxxxX

It will play there eventually. It was originally rumoured to be opening in 3 cities (London, New York & Shanghai) but it seems it's just opening in London.
Here's my second update:

There will be a third one tomorrow as it's the POTO book Centenary!

I just found out this weekend that my cousin's bloke who works for a company that engineers the moving parts for stage shows is involved in this new production so they will get to see it for free - they are going to let me know if it is any good.
And you have just given me an extra reason to want to go to Vegas ; )

Oooh! I'm jealous! I'd love to see the New York version of Phantom (& the Vegas one is meant to be very good too).

I saw Phantom on Broadway in New York a couple of years ago and was totally blown away by it, having gone to see if only knowing the bear bones of the story. We had amazing seats and I absolutely loved it.
I am not sure that anything could top it and like you say, the sequal very rarely does the original justice.

People who have seen the preview have said the music is quite "rock-y" with guitars etc. so I'm even unsure about that!

Oh yes but it's many, many years later which means she could've gone to America then gone back to France as an elderly woman.

Usually if the first one rocks, the second one falls a little short :( I think Phantom of the Opera is something that should have just been left alone as it was a great stand alone movie/musical.
On the other hand I really would like to see the second one just to see if it's any good.

Christine doesn't die in the first one, neither does the Phantom, are you confusing this with another musical?
