Cash machines to issue more £5 notes

"The Bank of England is urging banks to give out more £5 notes from cash machines after a successful pilot scheme.
The note was once thought to be under threat but in the past two years the value of £5 in circulation has increased from £1 billion to £1.3 billion."

Many cash machines on the high street don't offer people the option of fivers but I've found that if you go into the bank branch then the inside cash machines usually let you withdraw five pound notes.

I think a reason for the increase of the use of the £5 note is because of people being broke! Instead of carrying £10 and £20 notes around they're more likely to only want to carry £5!

Also, if you're taking the bus, they don't like to take £10 unless you're buying a weekly ticket (even though some bus fares are £6 in my local area!) and they usually refuse £20 notes, so you're better off with a fiver in your pocket for bus fares too.

I have noticed this at my local cashpoint. Sometimes I find it annoying.

They used to offer £5's I guess they think they're too small for anyone to bother with, which is crazy.

It's just like Orange with their new tiny top-ups, you can spend what you can afford.

i think its a really good idea and sometimes you don't want to take out £10 and taking out £5 is a sensible idea

Me too! I just say "If the bus fares weren't so expensive then I'd have enough change to pay you!"

I have met some right stroppy bus drivers that refuse notes grrr. I would like to see more machines paying out fivers - sometimes a tenner is too much.
